Mary Anita Archer

Mary Anita Archer, 93, of Leavenworth, died Monday, May 16, 2011, at Bonner Springs Nursing Center.

She was born Aug. 10, 1917, in London, Ontario, Canada the daughter of Albert Wesley and Gwladys (Baker) Hayman.

In 1940 she graduated for the University of Western Ontario. She joined the British Mechanized Transport Corps during WWII and served in London, England during the blitz as a jeep driver. Mary was a very active volunteer though out her life. She volunteered for "Welcome to Washington" in the 1960s, helping embassy spouses new to the Washington DC area. Mary was a long-time member of the Leavenworth Philomatean Club. For 20 years along with her husband, they were civilian sponsor for visiting foreign military officers and their families while they were attending the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth. She was a founding volunteer and board chair for the Leavenworth hospice program. Mary attended and served on the board for the Leavenworth-Lansing Leadership Course of the Chamber of Commerce. She was active with Saint Mary College, including the Community Cultural Council and the Scholarship Friends Executive Board as well as a mentor to numerous students. She also volunteered for the Leavenworth County CASA and was a Leavenworth Court Appointed Special Advocate for children for several years

In April of 1940 she married William L. Archer just prior to his deployment with the Royal Canadian Regiment for World War II. He preceded her in death in 1985. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Cathleen Archer on October 16, 1977.

Mary is survived by her three sons, Gwilym Archer, David Archer and Barry Archer; her grandchildren, Layla Barbur, Katie Archer, David Archer, Jr., Muzna Archer and Katrina Archer; and her great-grandchildren, Zoe Barbur and Lucas Barbur.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 4 p.m. Friday, June 3, 2011, at St. Francis deSales Church, Lansing, KS. Inurnment will be at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to R.L. Leintz Funeral Home.
