Richard Behrens

Richard Martin Behrens, 81, of Lansing, passed away, Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014, peacefully at his home surrounded by family. He was born April 17, 1933, in Chicago, Ill., the son of George C. and Jessica M. (Maves) Behrens.

On Aug. 9, 1969, he married Frances E. Martin. Their marriage was blessed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bonner Springs on Dec. 10, 1990. Frances survives at the home. He is also survived by five daughters, Irene (Mark) Teig of Independence, Mo., Michele Denton of Paola, Kan., Michelle (Mary) Hearn of Conroe, Texas, Barbara (Frank) Lisk of Leavenworth and Katherine (Paul) Herbert of the home; two sons, Richard (Laura) Behrens of Leavenworth and Frank (Nina) Hearn of Oak Grove, Mo.; two sisters, Pat Klineschmidt and Deborah Kimson; 24 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and two on the way.

Richard was a lifelong member of the VFW Post 56 in Leavenworth. He was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Lansing, Kan., for more than 23 years. He was also a 3rd and 4th degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Robert Behrens, George Behrens, Harold Behrens and Lloyd Behrens; and a sister, Gloria Scholz.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. with a vigil service beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2014, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. The rosary will be prayed at 11 a.m. Wednesday with a funeral service beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Grace Hospice.
