Rev. George Bertels

Rev. George Henry Bertels, 87 of Leavenworth, died Thursday, March 31, 2016, at Villa St. Francis in Olathe, Kan. He was born June 3, 1928, in Nortonville, Kan., the son of George and Marie (Forge) Bertels.

He attended St. Joseph Grade School in Nortonville and graduated from Nortonville High School in 1946. After graduation he attended Conception Seminary from 1948 to 1951. He then attended Catholic University from 1951 to 1955.

Father George was assigned to many parishes during his ministry; June 17, 1955, Asst. at St. Rose of Lima, Kansas City, Kan., Oct. 1, 1957, Studied Canon Law at Catholic University, March 29,1960, Admin. Pro.Tem. at St. Joseph, Kansas City, Kan., Jan. 20, 1961, Pastor at St. Joseph of the Valley, Leavenworth, Sept. 9, 1965, Pastor at St. Lawrence - St. Joseph of the Valley, Easton, March 30, 1966, Pastor at St. Casimir, Leavenworth, July 3, 1972, Chaplain at Leavenworth Penitentiary, July 15, 1981, Pastor at St. Gregory, Marysville, Oct. 1, 1991, Pastor at Prince of Peace, Olathe, July 13, 1996, Pastor at St. Gregory, Marysville, July 14, 2001, Pastor at Sacred Heart, Topeka, July 14, 2006, Pastor of the newly formed parish, composed of the current parishioners of Sacred Heart and St. Joseph Parishes, Topeka, and on July 13, 2007, he retired. He continued to serve as a Judge for Archdiocesan Tribunal and served at the SCL Mother House from 2007 to present.

Father George is survived by his sister and brother in-law, Dolores and Ralph Bolin of Goddard, Kan.

He was preceded in death in 2003 by a sister, S. Marie Ann Bertels SCL.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 4, 2016, with a vigil service at 7 p.m. at Annunciation Chapel Sisters of Charity Mother House, 4100 S. 4th St., Leavenworth. Mass of Resurrection will begin at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at Annunciation Chapel with The Most Reverend Joseph F. Naumann D.D. as celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Nortonville, Kan. Memorials are suggested to Seminary Endowment Fund at the Archdiocese.
