Velma Blanken

Velma E. Blanken, 80 of Leavenworth, passed away, Friday, Sept. 4, 2015, at her home, surrounded by her family. She was born March 25, 1935, at Hanover Kan., to Herman and Mathilda Meyer.

She married Elmer Blanken on June 8, 1958, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Beatrice, Neb. He survives at their home, in Leavenworth, Kan. Their union was blessed with six children, Karen (Mike) Lauterbach, Randy, Scott and James Blanken, Lisa (Richard) DeMaranville and Mark (Beckey) Blanken. She had seven grandchildren, Tiffany (Jason Schneider) Schultz, Erica DeMaranville, Kevin Schultz, Tristan DeMaranville, Patrick Lauterbach, Joshua and Marshall Blanken; and two great grandchildren Joey and Sophie Schneider. She is also survived by one brother, Norbert (Tina) Meyer; and many brothers and sisters in-law and nieces and nephews.

Velma was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hanover Kan. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and was currently a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Leavenworth.

She was employed at St. Paul Lutheran School cafeteria, Bohm’s Department Store, Dairy Queen and was a homemaker. She was an excellent seamstress, cook and loved to knit and crochet. She also enjoyed square dancing for many years with the Hazel Nut Crackers. Later in life she enjoyed many adventures with Elmer as they traveled the continental United States, Hawaii and Alaska.

She was preceded in death by one son, Randy Blanken, her mother and father, two sisters, Erna Licht and Elnora Bauman and two brothers Ernest and Victor Meyer.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2015, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Trinity Lutheran Church.
