John Joseph Blume

John Joseph Blume. 77, of Leavenworth, died, Wednesday, July 15, 2015, at Twin Oaks Health and Rehabilitation. He was born on Jan. 23, 1938, in Leavenworth, Kan., the son of John and Adelia (Miller) Blume.

He graduated from Leavenworth High School in 1957. After high school, John joined the United States Army Reserves from 1958 to 1964. He also worked at the Leavenworth Times, the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks and Bell Hall Library before retiring in 2005.

John married Catherine “Kitty” Blume on April 11, 1964. After 25 years of marriage, John and Kitty divorced, but remained good friends and support to one another, sharing holidays and family activities. From that marriage, John is survived by two daughters, Mary (David) Moss of Parkville, Mo., and Michelle (Kevin) Manning of Topeka, Kan.; three grandchildren, Nicole Moss, Ashley Moss and Harlow Manning; and a sister, Lorraine Blanford of Evansville, Ind.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Buick Club.

John always enjoyed working the annual dinners at St. Joseph and Sacred Heart Catholic Churches. He was very handy, mechanical and crafty. He could see the value in repurposing and repairing many discarded items. His favorite motto was “One man’s trash is another’s treasure”. John loved working on his Ford Model A Roadster as a young adult. He was also a certified scuba diver, he took diving trips to Bonaire, Belize and Hawaii.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation for the loving care provided to John by the Twin Oaks Staff and Crossroads Hospice.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. with the rosary prayed at 5:30 p.m., Sunday, July 19, 2015, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, at St. Joseph Church with Rev. David McEvoy, O.Carm., as celebrant. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to American Veteran’s, Alzheimer’s Foundation or St. Joseph Catholic Church .
