Calvin Brey

Calvin Johnston Brey, 93, of Leavenworth, died, Monday, Oct. 24, 2016, at Kansas City Hospice House. He was born Jan. 21, 1923, in Oskaloosa, Kan., the son of Robert and Ethel (Johnston) Brey.

On May 15, 1954, Calvin married Fern Ardell Shafer. She survives at the home. He is also survived by his grandson, Dr. Todd (Julie) McBroom of Leavenworth; his great-grandchildren, Baylee McBroom and Blaine McBroom; his sister, Norma Barnard; and several nieces and nephews.

Calvin was preceded in death by his parents and several of his siblings.

Calvin enlisted in the United States Army in 1943, where he served during WWII and the Korean War, where he was honored with the Bronze Star. After discharge from the Army he went to work at the United States Penitentiary where he worked as a lab technician. After retiring from the penitentiary he worked at St. Mary College as a security guard. He then retired and spent his time with his family.

Calvin was a loving husband and grandfather. He was loved dearly by his family and friends for his kindness and generosity. He will be greatly missed, by all who knew him.

A funeral service will begin at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31, 2016, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. Burial with Army honors will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery. Following the burial there will be a gathering at the Brey home. Memorials are suggested to Kansas City Hospice.
