Donna M. Burden

Donna M. Burden, 60, of Leavenworth, passed away, Friday, June 14, 2013, at St. Luke’s in Kansas City, Mo. Donna Marie Burden was born November 3, 1952 in Cincinnati Ohio to the Holland Hill (Deceased) and Vera Frances Scott (Deceased).

Marie was a life-long learner. After graduating from Woodward High School in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1970, she earned an Associate’s Degree in Management from Lansing Community College and a Bachelor of Business Administration from Northwood Institute in Lansing, MI; a Bachelor of Science in Management from Park University, Platte City, Mo;, and a Master of Science in Management from Saint Mary’s University, Leavenworth, Kan. She retired as a Office Manager/Senior Account Executive with Beneficial Finance Company.

Marie received a heart transplant in May of 2001. In 2003, she met First Lady Laura Bush and was inspired to start a Leavenworth-area support network, spreading advice and comfort for women living with heart disease. As a national spokesperson for Women-Heart, she reached thousands of women across the U.S. with messages of hope and inspiration. Marie dedicated her life to serving GOD through community service. She attended the Fort Leavenworth Gospel Service (FLGS) where she served as the “Search Your Heart” ministry leader. She was also a devoted member of the Women’s Ministry and Choir. A 20 year military spouse, Marie received numerous community service awards, including the distinguished Artillery Order of Molly Pitcher, for her faithful and devoted service to the US Army community. She was also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, advocating educational, social, and health advancement through community awareness.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Holland Hill and Vera Frances Scott and two sisters: Yowanda Baltimore and Vanessa Vandergriff.

Marie leaves to cherish her memory: Her loving husband of 31 years, Chester Burden; her son, Robert Baughman III, grandson Alex Hoover(18), granddaughters Aisis Baughman (13) and Raquelle Marie Baughman(3); step-mother Lovely D. Hill ; brothers John Holland Hill, John Harman Hill, and Bruce Moore; sisters Gracy Thompson (Jimmy), Betty Gill, Millicent Stewart, Darlene Johnson (Jerry deceased), Zeda Moore, Rosalinda A. Baltimore, Barbara Hill-Kelly (Odell), and Vera Brown (Anthony);, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. followed by a Sorority memorial commencing at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 20, 2013 at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 11:30 a.m. with viewing from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Pioneer Chapel, Fort Leavenworth. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Monday, June 24, 2013, at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
