Paul Spencer Carter

Paul Spencer Carter, 68, of Leavenworth, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, Sept. 19, 2016, at his home. He was born Aug. 26, 1948, in Atchison, Kan., the son of Harlen Brooks Carter and Verda Pauline “Polly” (Vanderal) Thompson.

Paul grew up the youngest of six and he attended Leavenworth High School.

In 1968, he married his high school sweetheart, Barbara A. Matzeder. She survives at the home. He is also survived by a daughter, Kimberlee (Morgan Swiler) of Lansing; a grandson, Kaden Swiler; two brothers, Carlen “Toolie” (Barbara) Carter of Platte City, Mo. and James “Dwight” (Barbara) Carter of Leavenworth; a sister, Kay (Noel D.) Jones of Weston, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

Paul served in the United States Marine Corps. After returning home from Vietnam, Paul worked at Gould Inc., from 1970 to 1976 as a supervisor. From 1976 to 1980 he worked at the Veterans Administration in Leavenworth. Concrete Construction became his career and he worked for Kersten Construction Company for 20 years as a foreman. After working for Kersten he went to various other construction companies until he retired in 2011.

Paul was a great family man and loving father. His greatest achievement was being “Papa” to his grandson. It was his greatest joy in life. Paul also loved golfing, bird hunting, Royals baseball and cutting his grass. He excelled at playing softball and loved to ride his motorcycle. In 1990 he was first in the State of Kansas for the ATV 4 Stroke class. His family and friends will always remember him as an ornery, humorous person who loved life.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents; his step-father, Ernest D. Thompson; and a brother, Harlen “Bub” Carter.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, 2016, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home. A committal prayer service with military honors will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Children’s Mercy Cancer Center.
