William Dougherty Sr.

William Michael Dougherty Sr., 70, of Leavenworth, passed away Monday, March 31, 2014, at St. John Hospital. He was born on Sept. 22, 1943, in Leavenworth, Kan. The son of Alonzo and Frankie (Gilliand) Dougherty Sr.

He graduated from Immaculata High School in 1962. William attended Independence Community College where he won the NAIA National Championship. He then continued his education at Emporia State University.

Feb. 19, 1966, William married Dollie Lee Duckworth in Leavenworth, Kan. She survives at the home. He is also survived by two sons, William M. (Elena) Dougherty Jr. of Fort Worth, Texas and Marcus Dougherty of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Cecilia Dougherty of Fort Worth, Texas and Ann Hinds of Leavenworth; 3 grand children, Devon, Ashley and Janell; three great grandchildren, Mya, Adrian, and Aziah; and two brothers, Alonzo Dougherty of Leavenworth and Francis P. Dougherty of Memphis, Tenn.

liam served in the United States Army and he was machine operator at GMB batteries for three years. He retired from the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Leavenworth after 26 years. William is a Kansas State and Immaculata High School Hall of Famer. He enjoyed bowling and watching his favorite sports and western movies. William loved spending time with his friends and family.

He wass preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Dougherty.

Viewing will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2014, at St. Joseph Church. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. at the church with Rev. David McEvoy O.Carm., as celebrant. Burial with military honors will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Saint Joseph Church, Immaculata High School or Davita Dialysis Center. Arrangements by R.L.
