Eugene V. “Gene” Fleek

Eugene V. “Gene” Fleek, 91, of Leavenworth, died Saturday, July 9, 2011, at Golden Living Center.

He was born April 10, 1920, in Sedgwick, Kan., the son of Ira B. and Minnie L. (Trowbridge) Fleek.

Gene served in the Army during WWII. After discharge he attended and graduated from Kansas State University. He taught and coached in the Leavenworth school system for 31 years beginning in 1949. He was teaching at West Middle School when he retired.

In 1942 he married Ruth Keener. She preceded him in death in 1965. He was also preceded in death by four brothers who also all served in WWII, and two sisters.

He is survived by two children, Mary Jeanne (Ronald) Wolf of Columbus, Ind., and William Fleek of Lansing; his grandchildren, Scott Wolf, Ruth Wolf, Melissa Blohm, Leah Kappeas and Kelly Fleek; and two great-grandchildren.

Gene was a world class horse shoe pitcher. He was a member of the American Legion, Lions Club, Eagle and Elks.

A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 14, 2011, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home with a reception following. Burial will be private at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Legion.
