Paula Jean Gilbert

Paula Jean Gilbert, 80, of Easton, Kan., died Nov. 21, 2018, with her loving family at her side after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born March 10, 1938, to Robert and Irene Belanger.

Paula grew up in Rochester, N.H., and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1956. She studied nursing at Notre Dame de Lourdes Hospital School of Nursing and earned her RN in 1959. Paula had a long and varied career in nursing serving as an operating room nurse at Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.H., emergency room charge nurse at Wentworth-Douglas Hospital in Dover, N.H., and finally as an industrial nurse at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Company in West Palm Beach, Fla.

She married her high school sweetheart, Thomas L. Gilbert, on Sept. 19, 1959. After a short time in Meridian, Conn., Thom and Paula moved back to Rochester where they raised their two sons, Scott and Dean. They moved to West Palm Beach, Fla., in 1983. After retiring in 1999, Thom and Paula moved to Port Orange, Fla., where Paula enjoyed golfing, painting, and travel. They moved to Easton, Kan., in 2015.

The family lovingly remembers Paula’s passion for music, dancing, sports, reading, and crafts of all sorts. She was also a devoted Boston Red Sox fan who enjoyed watching their games – wherever she was. Her faith and family were always very important to her and she especially enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Paula was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Dennis Belanger.

She is survived by Thomas, her husband of 59 years, of Easton, Kan.; a sister-in-law, Ellen Belanger of Bedford, N.H.; two sons, Scott (Lorene) Gilbert of Yorkville, Ill., and Dean (Rhonda) Gilbert, of Easton, Kan.; seven grandchildren, Ryan, Alan (Holly), Adam (Ashley), Jennifer, Paul, Sarah and Hannah Gilbert; and two great-granddaughters, Alexis and Isabella Gilbert.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, November 30, 2018, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. The Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Friday. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Leavenworth, Kan. Interment will be at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Cemetery in Rochester, N.H., at a later date.
