Oliver Gene Gillom Sr.

Oliver Gene Gillom Sr., 69, of Leavenworth, passed away, Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017, at Cushing Memorial Hospital. He was born Sept. 1, 1947, in Oxford, Miss., the son of Willie B. and Fannie Mae (Van) Gillom Sr.

Oliver attended schools in Leavenworth. He loved most sports, but basketball was his passion. He played basketball throughout his school days and was a member of the Leavenworth High School Varsity Basketball Team known as “The Fabulous Five”. He received an Associate Degree from Coffeyville Community College, Coffeyville, Kan.

On Sept. 29, 1979, Oliver was united in marriage with Iceola Grigsby. She survives at the home. Oliver also leaves behind to cherish his memory a son, Oliver G. Gillom Jr.; a brother, Willie Gillom of Leavenworth; two sisters, Doris Ramos and Delores (Lonnie) Davis, both of Leavenworth; a grandson, Javarion; two aunts, one uncle, many nieces, nephews, cousins; special friend, William Davis; and a god-daughter, Rev. Syvette Davis.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Youla Brandt.

Oliver grew up in Independent Baptist Church. He was employed at Hallmark Cards Select Drive, retiring in 2007 with 39 years of service. Oliver was totally engrossed in technology. He was self-taught in computer programming and computer repairing.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 3, 2017, at Independent Baptist Church. A funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, at the church. Burial will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery.
