Edward Godfrey

Edward Earl Godfrey, 72, of Leavenworth, died, Friday, Oct. 19, 2018, at his home. He was born Dec. 29, 1945, in Omaha, Neb., the son of Lynnford Nathan and Naomi Ruth (Laduke) Godfrey.

He grew up in Leavenworth. Ed attended St. Paul’s Lutheran School and graduated from Leavenworth Senior High School.

After graduation. Ed served in the U.S. Air Force during Vietnam until 1968. In 1969 he joined the Leavenworth Fire Dept. After 26 years, he retired as Captain in December of 1995.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Sarilu; and three brothers, Paul, Ray and Joseph Godfrey.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, June (Hopkins) Godfrey; a daughter, Brenda Godfrey-Freeman; a son, William “Bill” Godfrey; three grandsons, Tyler (Ashley) Godfrey, Gunnar Freeman and Joshua (Tabby) Conard; five great-grandchildren, Trinity, Naomi, Felicity, Madison and Henry; brother-in-law, Terry Hopkins; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ed was loved and respected by all who knew him. He was a kind and loving man who always made others feel welcome. He enjoyed attending his grandsons’ sports activities and loved taking them fishing.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2018, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Bethel Cemetery.
