George Bernard Harnish

George Bernard Harnish, 63, of Garden City, Kan., passed away Friday, May 29, 2015, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kan. He was born Jan. 19, 1952, in Leavenworth, Kan., the son of George A. and Frances A. (Striegel) Harnish.

Bernie graduated from Easton High School in 1970. On Feb. 16, 1980, he married Emelina Tovar. They later divorced. He is survived by his children, Adriana (Bret) Heskett of Garden City, Kan., Kathleen (Curtis) Shephard of Wichita, Kan., and John Harnish of Topeka, Kan.; sisters, Kathleen Pryor of Vacaville, Calif. and Jeanie Lawrence of Leavenworth; a brother, Joe (Connie) Harnish of Leavenworth; six grandchildren, Emily, Palmer, Logan, Greyson, Alice, and Easton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-laws, Fred Pryor and Bob Lawrence.

After a long and dedicated career, Bernie retired from Southwestern Bell in 2003. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends. He was a member of Assumption Parish in Topeka. He loved his family dearly and will be greatly missed. His six grandchildren were the lights of his life.

Visitation beginning with praying the rosary will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, 2015, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home, Leavenworth. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 3, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Easton, Kan., with Rev. David McEvoy, O.Carm., as celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Lawrence Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Lawrence Cemetery or Homestead Health and Rehabilitation Nursing Home, Garden City, Kan.
