Rev. Edward M. Hays

Rev. Edward M. Hays, age 84, of Leavenworth, Kan., died Sunday April 3, 2016, at St. Luke’s Hospice in Kansas City, Mo., after a fall in his home. He was born Sept. 8, 1931, in Lincoln, Neb., the son of Thomas and Margaret (Nye) Hays.

He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas on May 31, 1958. He was an associate pastor at Christ the King Church, Kansas City, Kan. and Assumption Church, Topeka. In 1964 he became pastor at St. Dominic Church, Holton. After a year sabbatical in 1971 he was assigned as director of Shantivanam Archdiocesan House of Prayer (now Christ’s Peace House of Prayer). Beginning in 1996 he spent five years as the chaplain at the Kansas State Correctional Facility, Lansing. He retired from the active priesthood in 2001. He was a storyteller, artist and the author of more than 35 books on prayer and spirituality. He enjoyed most the gift of journeying with others as a spiritual companion.

He is survived by his brother Thomas (Annette) and sister-in-law Beverly; five nephews, three nieces, and their children. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Jane, and brother Joseph.

There will be a Prayer Vigil at 6:00 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church, 306 N. Broadway, Leavenworth, with visitation from 6:00 to 8:00. Mass of Resurrection will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday with The Most Reverend Joseph F Naumann D.D. as celebrant. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, St. Joseph of the Valley Church, 31151 207th Street, Leavenworth, Kan. Memorials are suggested to a fund that will distribute all contributions to the charitable causes dearest to Fr.
