Andrew Joseph Heintzelman

Andrew “Andy” Heintzelman Sr., 82, of Leavenworth, passed away early Christmas morning, Dec. 25, 2017, at his home to reunite with his wife, Anna Marie. He was born Oct. 4, 1935, at his farm home to Francis and Mary Harriet (Mottin) Heintzelman.

On Sept. 28, 1957, Andy married Anna Marie Goetz and they had six children. She preceded him in death on Oct. 17, 1986. He was also preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Anna Catherine Butterfield; two brothers, James Heintzelman and Bernard Heintzelman.

Andrew is survived by his six children, Andrew J. Heintzelman Jr., Sheila Heintzelman, Debbie (Kenny) Ludwig, Charlene (Doug) Welch, Diane (Ken) Pitts and Bruce (Brenda) Heintzelman; nine grandchildren, Jamie, Krystal, Cassie, Amanda, Eric, Brian, Daniel, Michele and Jessica; eight great-grandchildren, Diamonique, Deveyon, Gaven, Alex, Julian, Paetyn, Leo and Jenaya.; a brother, Francis V. Heintzelman; a sister, Mary C. Wagner; and his caregivers who became like family to him, Leonard, Cathy and Ginger, along with all other caregivers who took care of him.

Andy was like a dad and grandfather to many.

He served in the Kansas National Guard and worked 35 years as a correctional officer for the Kansas Department of Corrections. Andy was active in St. Joseph Church as a member of the men’s society, bingo team leader and a long time usher on Sunday mornings.

Andy enjoyed his small farm with cattle and began collecting old tractors. By his side were his labs, first Shelby, and later Sammie and Jack. In his earlier years he was known for his large garden whom he shared the produce with family and friends. He was a kind man who befriended many and turned no one away.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. with the Rosary at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018, at St. Joseph Church. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at the church, with Rev. David McEvoy, O.Carm., as celebrant. Burial will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph Church or L.A.W.S. (Leavenworth Animal Welfare Society).
