Betty Heintzelman

Betty A. Heintzelman, 91, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014 at Twin Oaks in Lansing. She was born, Sept. 13, 1922, in Atchison, Kan., to Ira and Alta (Widmayer) Hammond.

Betty graduated from Atchison High School in 1940 and attended Mount Saint Scholastica College. On Sept. 8, 1943, Betty married Lawrence E. Heintzelman in Nashville, Tenn., at St. Mary Church. She and Larry lived in Leavenworth since 1946. Larry passed away Dec. 22, 2001, after 58 years of marriage.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Judy (Dan) Shaffer of Leavenworth; her son, Tom (Cyndy) Heintzelman of Overland Park, Kan.; she has five grandchildren, Brandan (Ebony) Shaffer, Tandace (Rodney) Bell, Molly (Jacob) Latta, Ashley (Derek) Wiedenmeyer and Corinn (Jake) Kauzlarich; and she is also blessed with six great-grandchildren, Nicholas (Brandan) Shaffer, Madison (Tandy) Scholdberg, Harper Latta, Everett (Molly) Latta, Liv (Ashley) Wiedenmeyer and June (Corinn) Kauzlarich.

In addition to her husband, Betty was preceded in death by a brother, William Hammond; and two sisters, Florence Harrison and Mary Gentry.

Betty was a member of Sacred Heart Church and their Altar Society. She was a member of the Friendship Club, her Bridge groups and the Red Hat Ladies Club.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25, 2014, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Phillip Winkelbauer as celebrant. Burial will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Sacred Heart Church or to Hospice Partners of Kansas.
