Dorothy Hund

Dorothy Jane Hund, 95, of Oakland, Calif., passed away, Sunday, Aug. 31, 2014. She was born on Sept. 28, 1918, in Leavenworth, Kan., the daughter of John Aaron and Eva Ann (Noll) Hund.

She graduated from Immaculata High School in 1936 and went on to receive her nursing degree from Cushing Memorial Hospital in 1942. From 1943 to 1946, Dorothy was a Captain in the Army Nurse Corps serving in England and France. She was discharged in March of 1946.

After completing a Post Graduate course in surgery at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., Dorothy moved to Oakland, Calif. in Sept. 1947. She worked at Children’s Hospital for 33 years. She was on the surgical team and helped start the Open Heart Surgery Program in 1958. Dorothy retired in 1980. After retirement she spent much of her time doing what she enjoyed, traveling.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Alice Heim; two brothers, John M. Hund and Norman A. Hund.

Dorothy is survived by two sisters, Anna Marie Todd and Patricia Schwinn; a sister-in-law, Elaine Hund; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014, beginning with recitation of the rosary, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, at St. Joseph Church with Fr. David McEvoy, O.Carm. as celebrant. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Kickapoo, Kan. Memorials are suggested to Children’s Hospital of Oakland, Calif. or St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Oakland, Calif.
