Margaret "Peggy" Ellen Jerrit

Margaret “Peggy” Ellen Jerrit, 94, of Leavenworth, died, Monday, Feb. 19, 2018, at Twin Oaks Health and Rehab. She was born Oct. 5, 1923, in Leavenworth, Kan., the daughter of George R. and Margaret M. (Rafter) Bergman.

On Nov. 22, 1945, Margaret married Harry W. Jerrit in Leavenworth. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents, etc.

Peggy is survived by a son, John E. (Sandi) Jerrit; a daughter, Margaret “Peggy” (Dick) Hammersmith; five grandchildren, Shelly (Wes) Hammersmith-Brooks, Amy (Jeff) Yallaly, Brian (Brandy) Jerrit, Lisa (Lenn) Stacey and Jason (Marina) Hammersmith; eight grandchildren, David Schmidt, Heather Schmidt, Sarah Schmidt, Ashleigh Yallaly, Aiden Hammersmith, Dillon Hammersmith, Kara Stacey and Gwen Stacey.

She was a lifetime resident of Leavenworth. Peggy was a southwestern bell pioneer working as one of the first women’s telephone operators until her retirement in the business office in 1973. She was a member of St Joseph Church, a member of the fraternal order of Eagles auxiliary 55, Ladies auxiliary to veterans of foreign war, American legion auxiliary and Daughters of Isabelle. She volunteered many years at St. John and Cushing Hospital.

Peggy enjoyed bowling on local leagues and she loved playing cards with all her friends. She traveled visiting friends, family and many exiting places while living life to the fullest.

Visitation beginning with the Rosary will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, 2018, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, at St. Joseph Church with Rev. David McEvoy, O.Carm., as celebrant. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to National Alzheimer’s Research.
