Thomas Sanford Johnson Jr., died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011.

He was Born Sept. 28, 1927, in Leavenworth, the son of Thomas S. and Flora M. (Thomas) Johnson Sr. Who proceeded him in death.

 On Nov. 18, 1954, in Miami, Okla., he married Betty Jean Bird of Winchester, Kan.

 Tom was a 1945 graduate of Leavenworth High School. He served in the Army Ai r Force during World War II. He worked for t he U.S. Federal Penitentiary at Leavenworth for 25 years retiring as a Correctional Counselor in 1977.

 Tom was a self taught carpenter and electrician and built three houses with assistance from his brothers and friends. He enjoyed 20 years of fishing at his homes on the Lake of the Ozarks. When he was younger he fished on Stranger Creek. He also enjoyed many years of hunting.  Tom was a lifetime member of the American Legion and the National Rifle Association.  He believed in keeping his home in good repair and enjoyed his garden, yard and it's wildlife. Until the end he was telling his family and friends what to do to keep it shipshape. He was a strong protector of his family and loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 

 Tom is survived by his wife; children, William D. (Sharon) Johnson of Easton, Kan., B. Joan Johnson (Bob Slater) of Overland Park, Kan., Pamela G. (Lawrence) Tuttle of Leavenworth, Candace L. Johnson, Aurora, Colo., Thomas S. (Virginia) Johnson III of Indianapolis, Ind. and step-daughter, Georgia A. (Gary) Vestal of Easton; grandchildren, Jenny (Robert) Guarino, Andrew Slater, Matthew Slater, Sandra (Nate) Tuttle Kiehne, Amanda Lockwood, Laura Lockwood, Tiffany (Gavin) Johnson Stead, Brittany Johnson, Christopher Johnson, Elizabeth Johnson and step-grandchildren James Vestal and Jill (Alan) Vestal Shoup; great-grandchildren: Kiersten, Stephen, Kylee and Kameryn Guarino, Benjamin and Kendal Kiehne; step-great-grandchildren, Christian Kiehne, Kaitlin, Cory and James Vestal and David and Zachary Shoup.

 Tom is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Donald (Mary) Johnson, Dean (Diane) Johnson, Wanda Nash, Betty (Larry) Gardiner and Peggy (Kenny)  Heintzelman and sister-in-law Judy Johnson.

 Tom was proceeded in death by his granddaughter, Melissa Tuttle, brother, Robert Johnson, and sisters, Shirley Joseph and Flora "Sis" Byrd and step-daughter, Jeanie Wright and step-great-granddaughter, Hollie Vestal.

Visitation will be from 5 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow the visitation at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Graveside services and burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Mount Muncie Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you consider memorials to the Shriner's Children's Hospital or the American Cancer Society.
