Janice Koch

Jan was a loving and cherished daughter, wife, mother and wonderful friend as well as an active respected volunteer within the community. Born Janice Lynn Furtado August 2, 1944, at Wareham, Massachusetts, she grew up on Cape Cod residing in Falmouth. Jan was the only child of Manuel Vargas Furtado and Emily Freitas Costa. She recalled Franklin D. Roosevelt was President and the U.S. was at war with Germany and Japan. Frank Sinatra was wooing the girls at Rockaway Beach in New Jersey and in New York City; radio was the world's communication line to current events and entertainment. Families gathered in the evening to listen to Amos and Andy, Nelson Eddy, Jack Benny and the swing of the Big Bands.

Jan was fond of her 100% Portuguese heritage descended from Fayal, Azores. Her immigrant parents and relatives spoke Portuguese in the home and English as a second language. Her childhood experiences fueled a lifelong passion for family history connecting family in Europe, America, and even South America. She was fond of reading, writing and continuous learning.

Jan loved her family. She married Henry S. Koch of Manchester Missouri in 1970 and started a wonderful family of two girls and two boys which grew to be 15 including grandchildren Grammy, as she liked to be called, loved her children dearly and loved to send custom made birthday cards and holiday greetings to each never failing. Though never wealthy, she and her husband Hank found ways to occasionally travel worldwide and even served for 12 months as missionaries together in Buenos Aires, Argentina 2011-2012. She was a stalwart example of faith and spirituality to all those who knew her and often had uplifting words of advice and love for those around her. She was an amazing friend. Her acts of spiritual service touched countless people. She loved visiting those who needed a kind word or a material need. Beyond church service she volunteered in Leavenworth as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for children for several years and served as clerk for the Kickapoo Township.

Jan is survived by her husband Henry, her daughter Erica L. Koch-Wight, Son, Stephen H. Koch, daughter Susanne E. Koch, and son Henry A. Koch and eight grandchildren.
