Thomas Owen Martens Sr.

Thomas Owen Martens, 59, of Leavenworth, passed away Sunday, May 27, 2012. He was born Aug. 21, 1952, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Henry Arthur and Shirley (Pfeifer) Martens.

His family moved to Leavenworth in 1963, when his father bought the Chrysler Plymouth Dodge dealership from Clark’s. He graduated from Immaculate High School in 1970 and then attended Washburn University. After college Tom went to work for his dad at the dealership.

On July 15, 1972, he married Sylvia A. Koch. He then attended Chrysler dealer son’s school in Detroit. On September 5, 1973 their daughter Theresa M. Martens was born and on July 27, 1979 their son Thomas Owen Martens Jr. was born.

In 1990 Tom purchased the dealership and operated it until 2000. He continued in the car business and moved it to Missouri where he opened a pre-owned car lot in Tracy, Mo. He always had a dream of opening a bar and grille and purchased the building in Beverly, Mo., in 2008 and moved his business to that location and it became “Tommy Dodge Sports Bar and Grill”

He leaves behind his wife, Sylvia Martens; his daughter, Theresa M. and husband Robbie Thomas; his son, Tommy Martens Jr.; his grandchildren, Lexi Thomas, Reece Thomas, Landen Thomas and Justin McConell; his mother, Shirley Martens; and his brothers, Dale Martens, Tony Martens and Jeff Martens.

He was preceded in death by his father, Henry A. Martens Sr. and his brother, Henry “Hank” A. Martens Jr.

Tom belonged to the Elks and served as the Exalted Ruler from 1978 to 1979. He enjoyed playing golf. He loved being with his family. He was the most giving person someone could ask for.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 1, 2012, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. The rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. David McEvoy, O.Carm., as celebrant. Burial will follow at Mount Muncie Cemetery. Memorials are suggest to the Thomas O. Martens Sr. college scholarship fund at Citizens Savings and Loan, 5151 S. 4th Street Leavenworth, KS 66048.
