Joseph Burton Matzeder

Joseph Burton Matzeder, 88, of Leavenworth, died Thursday, July 9, 2015, at his home. He was born Sept. 20, 1926, the son of Frances and AnnaMae (Moore) Matzeder of Leavenworth, Kan.

Joseph Burton Matzeder

He was a standout athlete in his youth. Joe played football and basketball at Immaculata High School and Pony League baseball for the city. He performed so well on the baseball diamond, he attracted scouts in the early 1940s from the St. Louis Browns (now the Baltimore Orioles). Joe was an avid outdoorsman and loved nothing more than fishing and hunting deer or upland game with his family in his spare time. He loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren dearly and entertained us all with his lively stories of nights out in “old downtown” Leavenworth with his cherished wife Eleanor.

Following a brief enlistment in the U.S. Army, Joe worked at and retired from the Leavenworth VA after 36 dedicated years. While at the VA he met his wife, Eleanor, and the couple were married on Aug. 1, 1955. In between their shifts at the VA, they built the home where they would spend the rest of their lives. His beloved Eleanor precedes him death, along with his parents; brother, Al Matzeder; and a grandson, Michael J. Matzeder.

Joe is survived by his other brother, Andy (Clarice) Matzeder; his children, Joseph (Julia) Matzeder Jr., of Leavenworth, Vicki (Pat) Welch, of Lansing and James Matzeder, of Leavenworth; his grandchildren, Lindsey Welch (fiancé Kevin Baribeau) of Manhattan, Kan., Ashley (Bo) Blacketer, of Lansing, Casey (Nathan) Coffey, of Bonner Springs, Jeffrey Matzeder, of Leavenworth; and great-grandchildren Kayla, Declan and Hunter.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 13, 2015, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home in Leavenworth. A private family burial will follow in the coming week. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for a donation to the charity of your choosing.
