Dorothy Medill

Dorothy Medill, 89, of Leavenworth, passed away, Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015, at the Villa St. Joseph long term care center in Overland Park, Kan., peacefully surrounded by family. She was born on March 4, 1926, in Grand Island, Neb., the daughter of Austin J. and Edna (Smith) Haddix.

She was a Cadet Nurse during World War II and graduated from St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in 1947. She spent 30 years caring for veterans as a supervising nurse at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital. After retirement, she worked at the County Infirmary (Long Term Care Center), until the age of 77. Dorothy enjoyed singing in the church choir and traveling. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and could often be seen driving around town in her favorite car, a PT Cruiser.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Joseph H. Medill in 1993.

She is survived by a sister, Jean Rauert; four children, Rose Moore, Rita (Mike) Greenamyre, Joseph J. Medill and Rhonda (Dan) Schoenleber. Dorothy is also survived by nine grandchildren, Laurie (Rich) Holden, David (Lesley) Sedlock, Michael Moore, Megan Moore, Katherine Moore, John Moore, Dr. Scott (Sammy) Schoenleber, John Schoenleber and Mike Schoenleber, as well as six great grandchildren, Matt Holden, Katrin Holden, Christopher Sedlock, Nicholas Sedlock, Emma Sedlock and Grace Schoenleber. These next generations were the joy of her life.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28, 2015, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 12 p.m. Monday, at Immaculate Conception Church, with Fr. David McEvoy O.Carm., as celebrant. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to The University of St. Mary nursing program.
