Margaret New

Margaret M. New, 97, of Leavenworth, Kan., died peacefully Thursday, Jan. 31, 2019, at Twin Oaks Nursing Home following an illness. She was born in Des Moines, Iowa on July 15, 1921, the daughter of Earl J. and Ethel A. (Wood) Burgess.

She married the love of her life, Jack O. New on Dec. 25, 1940, a U.S. Army soldier in Des Moines, Iowa. They moved to California where he trained for an overseas assignment to the South Pacific. She then moved back to the mid-west with their daughter, while Jack was deployed to the south seas. She bought a home in Kansas City, Kan. and worked at the Fairfax B-25 assembly plant as a Rosie the Riveter. After her husband's return from WWII, they moved to a farm where they expanded their family. They later bought a farm in Leavenworth County where her husband built a house big enough for their five children. In 1962 they bought a house in Leavenworth and she lived there until 2018. Margaret worked at Hallmark Cards, the Glove Factory, Leavenworth High School and as a packer at Ft. Leavenworth, Kan.

Margaret loved exercising and swimming. She swam at the Leavenworth Community Center until she was 92 and exercised every day of her life. She was a strong advocate for eating healthy and being physically active.

She is preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two brothers, Connie and Bob; sons-in-law, Kenneth King and George Corriston.

She is survived by her children, Jackie (Mike) Beebe of Kingston, Okla., Joyce King of Griffin, Ga., Judy Corriston of Sherman, Texas, Jerry (Linda) New of Leavenworth and Jim (Gigi) New of Griffin, Ga.; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great great-grandchild.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2019, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Crossroads Hospice.
