Mark Evans Nicholson

(Ret.) Lt. Col. Mark Evans Nicholson, 65, of Leavenworth, died, Sunday, June 18, 2017. He was born Nov. 16, 1951, in Clarksburg, W.V., the son of Melvin and Patricia (Evans) Nicholson.

Mark enlisted in the United States Army at age 17 and served 4 years with the 82nd Airborne. He went on to receive a Bachelor’s Degree from West Virginia University and a Master’s Degree from SUNY Oswego New York.

He then returned to the Army and served 26 years as an Infantry Officer and Army Ranger. Most recently, Mark served as Deputy Warden at Lansing Correctional Facility.

Mark is survived by his wife of 40 years, Patty; a son, Chris Nicholson of Roeland Park, Kan.; a daughter, Kim Nicholson of Lawrence, Kan.; his mother, Patricia of West Virginia; a granddaughter, Cora Nicholson of Roeland Park, Kan.; a sister, Dona and two brothers, Paul and Eric, all of West Virginia.

He was an avid bicyclist and died doing what he loved, riding his bike.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 25, 2017, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A graveside service with full military honors will begin at 9 a.m. Monday, at Leavenworth National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made at Armed Forces Bank in Mark’s name to promote bicycling for youth in cooperation with Santa Fe Trails Bicycle Shop.
