Rita Catherine Ostgren

Rita Catherine Ostgren (Schuler), 72, of Leavenworth, Kan., died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2014, at Twin Oaks Health and Rehabilitation, in Lansing, Kan., after a four month illness.

Rita was born on Feb. 3, 1942, in Atchison, Kan., the daughter of Wilfred and Leila (Cope) Schuler of Nortonville, Kan. She was a graduate of Emporia State University with a degree in Special Education. She spent most of her teaching career with the Leavenworth School District and the Leavenworth County Special Education Cooperative. Children were her special delight. She loved to help them to learn, to discover.

A lover of the outdoors, she was a golfer, a gardener and a lover of birds. She traveled extensively throughout her life, in the United States, North America and Europe. She was a member of St. Casimir Church in Leavenworth and was an active member of the Altar Society. She loved to decorate the tables in the hall for church dinners.

She is survived by sons, Scott (Anna) Hahne of Sweden and Chad (Kate) Ostgren of Kansas City, Mo.; stepson, Kirk (Cynthia) Ostgren of Leavenworth; stepdaughter, Kim (Randy) Norwood of Hutchinson; brothers, Alan Schuler, Glenn Schuler, Paul Schuler and Dennis Schuler; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her good friend of many years, Kathy (Jerry) Campbell.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Sharon and her brothers, Clair, Carl, and Melvin Schuler.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2014, at the R. L. Leintz Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, Dec. 11 at 10 a.m. at St Casimir Church with Rev. Phillip Winkelbauer as celebrant. She will be buried at St. Joseph Cemetery in Nortonville beside her mother, father and sister. Memorial donations are suggested to St. Casimir Church.
