Daniel L. “Dan” Parker, age 30, sadly ended his life on Saturday, Nov 19, 2016; ending his personal struggle with undiagnosed depression.

Daniel Paker

Dan was born in Nov. 1986, at Griffiss AFB, Rome, N.Y. to James “Jim” and Anita (Nene) Parker. Over the course of his dad's Air Force career, Dan and his family went through several military moves that took them to five stateside bases and one tour in Germany. After Jim retired from the Air Force in 2001, the family returned to Lansing, Kan., where they'd previously lived during a posting to Ft Leavenworth. Dan and his brothers were able to reconnect with their Lansing friends and life was good.

Soccer was Dan's sport and he played the beautiful game in recreational leagues, on traveling teams and in high school. During high school Dan worked as a carryout at the commissary and saved nearly every penny he made to buy his dream car, a 1998 red Mustang. Dan graduated from Lansing High School in 2005. Dan attended Kansas University on an ROTC scholarship; he was a member of the Arnold Air Society and a Big Brother volunteer with the Lawrence chapter. Dan had an interest in Law Enforcement and following an internship with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations knew this was the career field he wanted to pursue. Dan graduated from KU in 2009 with a degree in Sociology and an emphasis in Criminology; he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force following graduation and completed initial training at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, Texas. Dan was then assigned as a Security Forces Flight Commander at F.E. Warren, AFB, Cheyenne, Wyo., where he supervised a 35-man flight providing security to remote missile sites in southeast Wyoming. While stationed at F.E. Warren, Dan lived in Ft Collins, Colo., where he was an active member of Timberline Assembly of God Church. Dan separated from the Air Force following his first assignment and was honorably discharged in 2014. Dan then moved back to the Kansas City area to reunite with family and friends and took a job as a Corporate Security Specialist with Bank of America until his passing.

Dan's hobbies and interests included cars, sport and recreational shooting and spending time with family and friends. He was blessed with many close friends from his years spent living in Lansing and attending KU. Dan's family and friends treasured his special place in our lives and are deeply saddened the depths of his despair eventually overcame him. We will miss him always and hold his memory in our hearts forever.

Dan is survived by his father Jim; his brother and sister-in-law, Chris and Stephanie (Ulrich) of Richmond Hills, Ga. and his brother, Steve, of Royse City, Texas; three aunts and one uncle.

Dan was preceded in death by his mother Anita Parker.

Dan will be remembered during a memorial service on Saturday, Nov . 26, at 3:00 p.m. at the R.L Leintz Funeral Home, 4701 10th Avenue, Leavenworth, KS 66043 (913-351-0200); Pastor Ken Kendall will officiate. The family requests any memorials be donated to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, 120 Wall St, 29th Floor, New York, NY 10005 or online at afsp.org.
