Martha Russell

Martha Ann Barnette Russell, 83, of Leavenworth, died, Friday, Sept. 30, 2016, in North Kansas City. She was born in Bossier City, Louisiana on April 5, 1933, to John Barnette and Fannie Mae Collins.

On August 29, 1952, she married the love of her life, Buck Lavar Russell.

Martha was a proud military spouse during Buck’s 20-year career. She was a very gifted quilter and crafter. There was nothing she could not sew to create or repair. She served two missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) one in the Birmingham, England Mission and her second with the Nauvoo, Illinois Mission. She volunteered at the Leavenworth Assistance Center as well as being a Temple Worker at the Kansas City, Mo. LDS Temple. Martha absolutely loved cooking for her family. Every Sunday was “Lunch at Grandma’s house”. and she loved a mean Rook card game.

Martha is survived by five children; Buck Russell of Logan, Utah, Patti Edgin of Las Vegas, Nevada, Brenda King of Snellville, Georgia, John Russell of Cheyenne, Wyoming and Betty Welch of Leavenworth, Kansas. She has 21 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren (plus four more on the way).

She is preceded in death by her husband, Buck.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, 2016, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. Viewing will be from 5 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, with a funeral service beginning at 5:30 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Burial will be in Robeline, Louisiana, Monday, Oct. 3, 2016, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to Leavenworth Assistance Center.
