Kathleen L. Sanders

Kathleen Louise (Gallagher) Sanders of Leavenworth died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2015. She was born July 29, 1927, in Newburyport, Mass., the daughter of Timothy R. and Sarah A. (Dockery) Gallagher.

She graduated from Newburyport High School and Burdett Business College, Boston. In addition to being a loving military wife and mother, she spent the majority of her working life employed by the Federal Civil Service holding positions with the OSI in Japan and New Jersey, the Pentagon, and the United States Disciplinary Barracks at Ft. Leavenworth. At the time of her retirement in 1992, she was working as an editorial assistant with the Military Review at United States Army Combined Arms Center, Fort Leavenworth. She was an avid sports fan rooting for her Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots and Notre Dame. She enjoyed reading, jigsaw puzzles and traveling with her husband.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 45 years, Charles G. Sanders of Leavenworth. She also is survived by her much loved children daughters, Donna (Gary) Greenwalt of Coralville, Iowa and Kathy Downes (Philip) Hersch of Wichita, Kan.; son, Timothy (Laurie) Downes of Naperville, Ill.,; stepson, Charles (Robin) Sanders of York, Pa.; and her four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2015, at Immaculate Conception Church in Leavenworth. Mass of Christian burial will celebrated at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. David McEvoy, O.Carm., as celebrant. Burial will follow at the Leavenworth National Cemetery. Memorials to a charity of your choice are suggested.
