Martha Nelle Shore

Martha Nelle (Schaefer) Shore, 88, passed away, Friday, Dec. 23, 2016, at home, surrounded by family, after a battle with cancer. She was the daughter of the late William Sr. and Bessie Ruth (Keller) Schaefer.

She grew up on the east side of Kansas City. Martha attended Askew Elementary School and then Ashland School. She went on from Ashland School to East High School where she graduated with honors in 1944. After graduation from High School, Martha obtained a job working for Wheelock Brothers Motor Freight for one year. Martha then obtained employment with the Kansas City Southern Railway for the next ten years where she worked for the Engineering Department and was secretary to Mr. Felix Grundy, Signal Engineer and Mr. Ray Cosby, Bridge Engineer.

On October 15, 1955, Martha married Cleon (C.A.) Shore. She and Cleon purchased the farm where she would enjoy country life for fifty plus years by his side. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cleon; her parents; a brother, William Schaefer, Jr.; and a sister, Ellen Dean Strother.

Martha was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church of Leavenworth and served as a Sunday School teacher for the Wesley Class. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading books and visited the library as often as she could.

She is survived by two sons, Carl (Suzanne) of Surprise, Ariz.; Clifford (Brenda) of Edgerton, Mo.; a daughter, Carolyn (Bradley) McCaffree of Haysville, Kan.; and five grandchildren.

The family wishes to express its sincere appreciation to the St. Luke’s Hospice of Leavenworth and Harry Hynes Hospice of Wichita for the wonderful care provided during Martha’s illness.

A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2016, at Hubbel Hill Cemetery in Tonganoxie. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to City Union Mission, Doctors without Borders or a charity of your choice. Arrangements in care of R.L. Leintz Funeral Home.
