Kathryn Ann Smith-Daniel

Kathryn Ann Smith – Daniel died Wednesday night Feb. 16, 2011, at the age of 75.

Kathryn Ann Smith-Daniel

She was born Sept. 23, 1935, the youngest daughter of the late Willie Joe Smith Sr. and Artie Lou Stone - Smith. Kathryn was born and raised in Augusta, Ga., and was baptized at the Mt. Calvary Baptist church in Augusta. She taught Sunday school, and attended C. T. Walker Grammar School and Lucy Laney High School. Mom met and married the late Rev. Claude A. Daniel on Dec. 9, 1951. To this union eight children were born.

Most of her life, mom was known for her cooking, working at the Truesdell Dining facility at Fort Leavenworth and then became one of the cooks for Hallmark Cards working on the night shift. After leaving Hallmark Cards, Kathryn worked at the CCA Detention Center as a supervisor in the kitchen. The inmates fondly referred to her as “Mom”. She worked there as long as she could until her health became an issue. Later mom worked part time at Food-4-Less and she worked as a caretaker taking care of the elderly in their homes.

Kathryn joined the Independent Baptist Church during the mid 1970’s. She was a member of the Usher Board, and sang in the choir for a short period. Kathryn was a member of the Eastern Star Fidelity Chapter #9 and served as worthy matron from 1984 - 1985. Faithfully she read her bible every morning, studying the word of God. She loved going to Bible study on Wednesday’s and she loved the choir. Mom collected the decorative spoons from all over the world. She also collected candle sticks and brass knick-knacks. Her favorite hobbies were “junkin’” going to the local thrift stores and garage sales. Even as a child, she was well known for her “feisty attitude” and had “a way with words” that some people didn’t understand, but it was all in love. We will miss her famous biscuits and her rice pilaf.

She leaves to cherish her memories, two daughters, Denise J. Moore (Allen) of Lansing and Lois McFadden of Topeka, Kan.; five sons, David T. Daniel and Jeffrey K. Daniel, both of Long Beach, Ca., Ron C. Daniel and Michael A. Daniel both of St. Joseph, Mo., and  Kenneth W. Daniel (Martha) of La Habra, Ca; one sister, Mrs. Dorothy Chapman of New York, NY; three brothers, Albert L. Smith (Nancy) of Augusta, Ga., Roy H. Smith (Clara) and Claude J. Smith (Betty) both of Leavenworth; 35 grandchildren;  57 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grand children; nieces; nephews; cousins; a special grand daughter, La’Naile Rainey-Duckett of Leavenworth; her dearest friends, Mrs. Callie Howard, Mrs. Luvenia McDaniel, Mrs. Alberta Hughes, Mrs. Ethel Scott and many other loving friends.

She was preceded in death by, her parents, Willie Joe and Artie Lou Smith; two brothers, Mr. Willie Joe Smith Jr. and Mr. Jesse Smith; one sister, Mrs. Leola Comer; two sons, Mr. Milton B. Smith and Mr. Donald C. Daniel; and one great granddaughter, Kamilah Daniel. She will be missed by all knew her.
