Peter Sowle

Peter Hunter Sowle, 77, of Leavenworth, Kan. passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013. Pete was born to the late Theo and Elizabeth (Hunter) Sowle, September 1, 1936 in Mt. Pleasant, Mich.

He graduated from Catholic Central High School in Grand Rapids, Mich. in 1955. He attended Central Michigan State University and received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1960. He also received his reserve commission in the United States Army on the same date, January 24, 1960. He then was commissioned into the Regular Army in March, 1963. Pete also received his Masters of Arts from Sam Houston State University in August 1972.

Pete proudly served his country for twenty six years. During his military career, Pete was stationed at Ft. Leavenworth three times. After returning from Europe, again assigned to Ft. Leavenworth, he and Jeannie decided to settle down and retire. Peter became a realtor for Reilly & Sons Real Estate after his military retirement and worked for the Reilly Agency for another 15 years.

Pete enjoyed the outdoors, be it his yard, boating, skiing or scuba diving. He and Jeannie traveled to a few countries they hadn’t had the opportunity to visit while in the military.

Pete is survived by his best friend of seventy years and wife of nearly 54 years, Jeannie (Dennis) Sowle; his siblings James (Ann) Sowle of Michigan, Janet (Denny) Deans and Stephen (Jan) of California; his daughters, Cynthia of Leavenworth, Elizabeth of Raytown, Mo., Kathleen of New York City, Melissa (James) Powell of Olathe, Kan.; his son, Ted (Stephanie) of Parkville, Mo.; six loving grandchildren, Cody and Tanner Powell, Allison Sowle, Ella, Lily and Lila Sowle; and step granddaughter, Savannah Shanley.

He will be remembered by his thoughtful generosity and kindness, his wanting to help others and special way he treated others. He will be sadly missed by all that knew him, especially Jeannie.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013 at Immaculate Conception Church. A Catholic Mass will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Cremation will follow.
