Margaret Thompson

Margaret A. Thompson, 78, of Leavenworth, passed away peacefully Sunday, Sept. 21, 2014, at St. Luke’s Medical Center, Kansas City, Mo., surrounded by her loving family.

Margaret was born Nov. 2, 1935, in St. Louis, Mo., the youngest daughter of Edward and Margaret (Hanselman) Kolbe. She married Frank L. Thompson on Jan. 16, 1954, in St. Louis.

Frank preceded her in death March 25, 2000. She was also preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Edward Kolbe, Jr., one niece and several nephews.

Margaret is survived by her four children, Nancy J. (Mike Penman) Thompson, David L. (Meredith) Thompson, Rae Ann Thompson and Eric J. (Kathleen) Thompson; her grandchildren, Matthew, Laura, Michelle, Kevin, Joshua and Olivia; her great-grandchildren, Kirky, Pandora and Zayden; and many nieces and nephews.

Margaret graduated from Beaumont High School in St. Louis, Mo. Her working career started at the F.W. Woolworth Company in St. Louis, where she met her future husband, Frank. She spent several years raising her four children before becoming a managing partner of the Animal Farm Pet Store in Leavenworth. She was an administrative assistant at the First National Bank in Leavenworth and bookkeeper for The Chronicle Shopper.

Margaret liked to live life to the fullest and always saw the glass half full. Known to her family and friends as Margee, she enjoyed attending rock concerts, working out at Curves and faithfully attending weekly Mass at Saint Joseph Church.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 pm Friday, Sept. 26, 2014, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Saint Joseph Church with Rev. David McEvoy, O. Carm., as celebrant. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Memorials in Margaret’s name are suggested to The Holy Spirit Adoration Sisters – Mount Grace Chapel, commonly called Pink Sisters of St. Louis; the MDS Foundation, for the prevention and cure of myelodysplastic syndromes - A bone marrow failure disorder.
