Kathleen Marie Thorne

Kathleen “Katie” Marie Thorne, 88, of Lansing, Kan., passed away,Oct. 30, 2017, surrounded by her family, in Topeka, Kan. She was born Oct. 5, 1929, in Hastings, Neb., the daughter of the late Karl and Mary Keller.

She lived in the Johnson County and Leavenworth County areas all her life. She attended Hickory Grove School and Overland Park Grade School; Shawnee Mission North High School, and KCKC College.

She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 66 years, Francis X. Thorne; her parents; a brother, Charles A. Keller; a sister, Sr. Charlotte Keller of the Ursuline order; and a granddaughter, Kimberly Ann Charlton Horn.

Survivors include seven daughters; Mary (Michael) Charlton, Fort Smith Ark., Beverly (Rick) Rittenhouse, Green Bay Wis., Chris (Terry) Beck, Topeka Kan., Teresa (Stan) Oyler, Topeka Kan., Anne ( Allen) Durst, Neillsville Wis., Rosemary Thorne (Dusty Griffin), Topeka Kan. and Catherine (Billy) Powell, Lansing Kan.; and three sons, Frank (Jana) Thorne, Arvada Colo., Mark Thorne, Scottsdale Ariz. and Joe (Jill) Thorne, Lenexa Kan. She is also survived by 34 grandchildren: Bryan, Melissa, Mark, Kristin, Patrick, Sean, Kevin, Kathleen, Dan, Mary Beth, Eric, Brett, Elise, Julie, Natalie, Thomas, Taylor, Emily, Jake, Jennifer, James, Mary, Mia, Eli, Heidi, Jason, Andrew, Ryan, Robert, David, Haley, Zoey; and 26 Great-Grandchildren; and her faithful poodle, Buddy.

Katie and her husband farmed in and around Basehor and Leavenworth for 23 years. Katie was also a writer and had numerous articles published in various magazines as well as a book titled “One Tall Tree” about her life with her husband and family.

Katie was a member of St. Francis de Sales Church in Lansing Kan. She taught religious education there and in other parishes for forty nine years and was Master Catechist. She served on the pastoral council, was a lector, eucharistic minister, money counter and office volunteer.

She had been a former Regional Link for the Co-workers of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, and had been active in forming the first Birthright program in the Leavenworth area.

Katie obtained her real estate license in 1974 and also had a broker’s license for 12 years. Together with her husband she worked as secretary and bookkeeper for Caldwell Banker and Thorne Realty for many years. She was an officer in American General Mortgage Company for 7 years before returning to school to become a registered nurse, she graduated at the age of 61.

Katie was employed at St John Hospital as a registered nurse for 19 years and retired from nursing at the age of 80. She also served on the board of St John Guild, where she had been president, vice-president, candy striper chairperson and secretary. She was on the board of directors for the Leavenworth assistance center since its inception and had been president and secretary several times. Katie had driven for Red Cross, delivered Meals on Wheels and volunteered for Hospice of Kansas City serving the patients of the Leavenworth area. She also served on several committees for Immaculata High School and the Greenway Auction.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, 2017, at St. Francis de Sales Church. The rosary will be prayed at 6 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, at St. Francis de Sales Church. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers Katie expressed a desire for Masses to be said or a donation to St Francis de Sales Church. Arrangements in care of R.L. Leintz Funeral home.
