Michael A. Wabs

Michael Allen Wabs, 75, of Kansas city, Kan., died, Nov. 24, 2018. At heart, Mike was always a farm boy, raised on the plains of Atchison, Neb. by Francis R. Wabs and Leona M. Dickau.

Mike enlisted in the U.S. Army infantry in 1961 at the start of the Vietnam War. After his time in the military, he became a journeyman lineman.

In the early 90s, Mike met Dee Backhus and they were inseparable ever since. She survives at the home. He is also survived by two sons, Joseph Allen Wabs and Thomas James Wabs of Minneapolis, Minn.; and two sisters, Rosalie “Snooky” Wabs and Susan Ayers and Carole Nelson.

Mike enjoyed the freedom of riding his Harley, having a beer at the American Legion and escaping in the winter to Florida. He found a measure of peace in good friends and a caring family whether related by blood or not. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion #199 in Kansas City, Kan.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Brenton Wabs; and a sister, Patricia Halbersleben.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2018, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home, 4701 10th Avenue, Leavenworth, Kan. Burial will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Wounded Warrior Project.
