Bernice W. Whiteside

Bernice W. Whiteside, 83, of Lenexa, died, Wednesday, July 13, 2016, at Lakeview Village in Lenexa, Kan. The daughter of Floyd and Nora (Parks) White of Hobbsville, N.C., was born on Sept. 23, 1932, in Elizabeth City, N.C.

On Aug. 29, 1953, Bernice married Col. (Ret.) Billy M. Whiteside. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Edmond White.

Bernice is survived by two sons, Bill Michael Whiteside and wife Linda of Lenexa, Kan. and Barry Whiteside and wife Janice of Irmo, S.C.; and three grandchildren.

She attended Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C. earning a Bachelor of Science degree in music and voice.

Her life’s journey while accompanying her husband during his military career included assignments to many military installations in the United States; tours in Germany, Korea and Ethiopia before retiring and moving to the Leavenworth and the Kansas City area. During their tour in Ethiopia in the early 1970’s Bernice received the “Queen of Sheba” Award for her devotion and service improving community relations between the American Community of Kagnew Station, the Imperial Ethiopian Government and the local populace. She also contributed to the University of Ethiopia teaching music. Bernice received other awards of Excellence and accolades at other military installations in the U.S. for her contributions to the military and local communities.

Bernice’s enjoyment was being with her pride and joy, her grandchildren and music. She enjoyed playing the piano and teaching private lessons. Some of her students have gone on to major in music at universities and conservatories, leading into careers performing at Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall and around the world.

A graveside service will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, July 18, 2016, at Leavenworth National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Lakeview Village Resident Council: Employee Appreciation Fund or Crossroads Hospice. Arrangements in care of R.L. Leintz Funeral Home.
