LTC (Ret.) Douglas R. Whiteside

LTC (Ret.) Douglas R. Whiteside, 68, of Leavenworth, passed away, Aug. 28, 2016. He was born in Asheville, N.C. on Nov. 16, 1947, the son of Russell and Sara (Pinson) Whiteside.


He graduated from A.C. Reynolds High School and then attended East Carolina University graduating with a B.S. in Geology and Webster University receiving a Masters in Management.

Following graduation, Doug joined the United States Army, eventually becoming a Master Army Aviator as a CH-47 Chinook pilot. Doug retired from the US Army in 1994 after 24 years of service, and filled his time working for USPA and IRA as a financial planner. Doug returned to government service as a civilian, working for C.A.L.L. at Fort Leavenworth.

In his spare time, Doug was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed traveling, hunting, watching his grandchildren participate in sports activities and cheering on the Kansas State University football team as a season ticket holder. As often as he could, Doug loved spending time in Arizona, with his stepsons and their families.

Doug is survived by his wife, Lani Whiteside; two daughters, Jennifer (Craig) Weddle, Lisa (Joel) Colletti; three stepsons, Kirk (Amy) Gates, Grant Gates and Clark Gates; a sister, Carolyn (Lee) Wyatt; six grandchildren, Carson, Mia, Samuel, Camden, Dylan and Tyler; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will begin at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, 2016, at Leavenworth First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. Memorials may be made in Doug’s name to The Shriner’s Hospital for Children.
