John R. “Jack” Zeugin

John R. “Jack” Zeugin, 85, of Leavenworth, passed away Monday, Sept. 26, 2011, at Country Care Nursing Home in Easton, Kansas.

John was born Oct. 30, 1925, in Leavenworth the son of Carl J. and Nellie (Larkin) Zeugin. He attended Leavenworth Catholic Schools and graduated from Immaculata High School in 1944.

Following graduation from high school, John enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving on active duty for nearly a year. Following his discharge from the Army, he began working as a Civil Service employee in the Finance Office at Fort Leavenworth, holding a variety of positions before retiring as the Non-Appropriated Funds Accounting Officer in the mid-1980’s.

Jack married Lila Belle “Pat” (Rounds) Zeugin in 1950, and together, they operated Zeugin’s Bookstore in downtown Leavenworth in the early 1960’s. Jack and Pat enjoyed many activities as a couple in addition to running their bookstore. They bowled in a Leavenworth bowling league in the early 1960s, played cards and spent many hours enjoying their campsite at Heim’s Lake in Easton. They were members of Immaculate Conception and St. Joseph Parish in Leavenworth.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Gladys (Zeugin) Huggins, and his wife Lila.

John is survived by his daughter, Deborah M. Wood and his granddaughter, Jennifer S. Vornholt, both of Leavenworth. Jack was a dedicated and loving husband, father, and grandfather. His family will always be grateful for his presence in their lives.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept.29, 2011, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. The rosary will be prayed at 6 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. David McEvoy, O.Carm., as celebrant. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Capital Campaign Fund at Immaculate Conception Parish, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
